چکیده
Differing values between communities and government resource managers may lead to conflict, particularly when community members are not involved in decision making. Increasingly, co-management arrangements have become an important tool increase local capacity for management, trust diverse groups, foster effective stewardship. However, depends upon collaboration users the ability understand relationships a given those who use it, even these often viewed as contravening conservation efforts. Invasive species, such feral pigs (Sus scrofa), present particular management challenges because they damage island ecosystems but also integral life ways food systems. Based on interviews with pig hunters Hawaiian Islands, we explored social-cultural practices of hunters, their reasons hunting, possibilities greater management. Results highlight importance hunting both other forms well-being cultural perpetuation, along opportunities (1) expanding mechanisms access improve invasive species; (2) integrating rights responsibilities meet objectives; (3) improving communication enhance collaborative arrangements. Considering context managing ecologically detrimental this study offers insights guide partnerships groups that sometimes perceived opposed species control

Vaccination of feral pigs (Sus scrofa) using iophenoxic acid as a simulated vaccine.
OBJECTIVES To develop an encapsulation method for delivery of vaccines to feral pigs, and quantify the effect of iophenoxic acid on captive feral pig blood iodine concentrations to assist in investigation of factors affecting vaccine uptake. DESIGN AND METHODS Feral pigs were administered iophenoxic acid by oral gavage, and consumption was assessed for different encapsulation methods in baits...

Florida offers a tropical climate favorable for outdoor activities and a...
متن کاملConservation action in the Gal apagos: feral pig (Sus scrofa) eradication from Santiago Island
Introduced mammals are major drivers of extinction and ecosystem change. As omnivores, feral pigs (Sus scrofa) are responsible for wholesale adverse effects on islands. Here, we report on the eradication of feral pigs from Santiago Island in the Gal apagos Archipelago, Ecuador, which is the largest insular pig removal to date. Using a combination of ground hunting and poisoning, over 18,000 pig...
